Protecting Youth at Work: Health, Safety, and Development of Working Children and Adolescents in the United States

Committee on the Health and Safety Implications of Child Labor, National Research Council and Institute of Medicine

336 pages, 6 x 9, 1998.

Protecting Youth at Work looks at what is known about work done by children and adolescents and the effects of that work on their physical and emotional health and social functioning. The committee recommends specific initiatives for legislators, regulators, researchers, and employers.

This book provides historical perspective on working children and adolescents in America and explores the framework of child labor laws that govern that work. The committee presents a wide range of data and analysis on the scope of youth employment, factors that put children and adolescents at risk in the workplace, and the positive and negative effects of employment, including data on educational attainment and lifestyle choices

School to Work

The School-to-Work Opportunities Act, signed into law in 1994, is administered by the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor. The Act provides funds to States and local communities to develop School-to-Work systems. STW encourages exposure to a broad variety of career options -- starting with speakers and field trips in elementary school and progressing to academically connected internships in a high school student’s field of interest. The underlying goal is to provide students with knowledge and skills that will allow them to opt for college, additional training, or a well-paying job directly out of high school.
