Open letter to Boeing Management

In today’s economic environment, The Boeing Company is faced with critical decisions. What we do now will affect our future. Our commitment is to jointly develop a contract that helps Boeing move forward and succeed in this challenging environment.

We are very disappointed to learn that Boeing management is mounting a mean-spirited, anti-union campaign that includes employing Mike Asensio of Baker Hostetler (a known anti-union law firm), launching a nasty web page and holding misleading closed door management training sessions.

Your leaders have stated that Management’s policy regarding unions is “Where we have them we will work with them and where we don’t have them we will oppose them.” Regrettably, it seems they now have added, “Whenever we get the chance we will try to eliminate them.”

Unfortunately, this anti-union, anti-employee attitude is not constrained to the WTPU decertification campaign and is now affecting our negotiations. This outdated philosophy is preventing Boeing from reaping the benefits of a positive labor-management relationship, which has been shown to yield the most productive workforce, highest quality products and best market performance.

Our goal is a good contract that works for employees, The Boeing Company and our customers. We believe that negotiations are an opportunity for SPEEA and Boeing to publicly display our real principles and commitments. For us, negotiating a good contract is reflective of a positive labor- management relationship, focused on meeting company goals and initiatives. Negotiations should NOT be about Union vs. Management; rather, it should be about employees and management working together toward a positive future. We can set the example for the workforce and the world.

We are committed to help Boeing move forward in our challenging environment. We ask you to disengage from this ill-advised attack, put down your weapons and let our co-workers make the decision about representation in a neutral environment. As a sign of good faith, we ask you to send the anti-union lawyers home, shut down the one-sided website, stop advocating decertification and help us return to the environment in which we can negotiate a contract that works for our members, our company and our community.

To do otherwise is to set up an antagonistic atmosphere instead of a cooperative atmosphere within which we can work together for our mutual success.

Sincerely,

Steve Smith, Chair Bob Brewer, Spokesman
