(Oct 6, 2009) The United Teachers of Wichita President, Larry Landwehr, announced today that Wichita teachers have approved the 2 year, tentative agreement with the USD
259 Board of Education. 2,379 of the 4,179 teachers voted, or 57%. Of those voting, 76% voted to accept the contract and 24% voted to reject it. The BOE will vote on the agreement next Monday, Oct.
12.
President Landwehr says the results are not surprising, including the low turnout. “Teachers didn’t find much in this agreement to get excited about, and probably chose to express
their dissatisfaction by not voting. Teachers have shown that they are willing to do their part in these tough economic times, but many have increased expenses in cost of living and additional
education costs to be concerned with. Now is the time for the BOE to work with UTW in meeting the needs of the teachers who work daily with our students”
