Theron Black

Theron Black exemplifies what the Charlie Duran Award represents.

First a little back ground on Brother Theron Black.

Theron Black became a member of local lodge 733 at Beechcraft in 1941 He entered US Air Force 1943, and served as Flight Engineer and Crew Chief for B-29 configured as an F13A which did Aerial Reconnaissance Photography in the South Pacific & Japan during World War II.

Reinstated into Local Lodge 733 Machinists March 20, 1946 after return from US Air Force. Theron remains a full dues paying member in good standing to this date. Theron was Secretary-Treasurer of District Lodge No. 70 Machinists 1958 -1961 and was Grand Lodge Auditor Machinists 1961 -1984 

Theron first volunteered as a board member with “Community Chest” and was a founding board member of United Way of Wichita and Sedgwick Co. 1975 and continues to serve on the Board of directors of the now United Way of the Plains which changed it’s name in 1987. Theron also has served

on the United Way of the Plains executive Committee since 1993, finance committee since 1992 and served on the Allocations Committee for three years. Theron also served on the Allocations Panels now know as Impact Councils for twelve years.

Theron has also found time to volunteer on the advisory board for the Federal Reserve Board, advisory board for Sedgwick County department on aging and currently serves as State wide Chairman on Central Plains Area Agency on Aging.

Theron was a founding member of the KASEL Board of directors (A United Way of the Plains community agency) Theron played and instrument part in helping the agency obtain their 501C3 status so KANSEL could receive United Way funding.

Theron also sat on the Board of Directors of Maude Carpenter Children’s Home formally know as Carpenters Place.

Theron is also a past president and current board member of District 70 retirees club. And has found time to help with District 70 Angel Tree program for several years.

Theron has spent a lifetime in the service to the people of his union, his church, his community, and his country. These examples are only a few of the endless list of Boards, commission, and projects he has worked on in his lifetime. His service continues, and we hope it will for many more years to come
